Conferences

Conferences are designed with the student in mind.  All guardians and caregivers attending should coordinate their schedules so that we can meet collectively.  This optimizes communication and and teamwork.  Please sign up for conferences by clicking this link, Fall Conferences 2019.  I look forward to partnering with you to make this a great year for your student. 

What are we learning?


Reading
Wow!  What enthusiastic readers we have in our class!  I’m so impressed by the amount of time our students are wanting to read each day.  This is fantastic. Please contact me if you need books at home to support your child’s reading.  

This week we will be practicing good reading habits: being a strong reader, choosing books, taking care of books, and reading with a buddy.
    
Writing
We have successfully launched Writer’s Workshop.  Students are writing independently each day using their own creativity and voice.  Our focus over the next few weeks will be on Personal Narratives. Students will be given a page to record first names of family members, pets, and any other people who are important to them.  This list will be kept in their writing folder to reference as needed. Please look for this to come home on Monday. 

Math
Some students have already finished the informational/practice math packet for Unit 1.  Wow! That is some pretty awesome initiative. For those who have decided to finish the work in pace with our lessons- we will work on Unit 1, lessons 6-10 this upcoming week.      

*Note that the math packet is for your information as well as a little bit of practice for our students.  Math is all about understanding and problem solving. This looks a little different than what many of us were exposed to in math growing up.  Communicating the how we do things and why is the main reason for sending home the informational/practice packet. It’s great if you and your student decides to complete the work.  If not, no worries. Hopefully, the information will assist you in supporting your learner. There are many game suggestions and key vocabulary to incorporate into everyday language.          

Science
Why is it so hard to make new inventions?  Students will be introduced to the surprisingly important role of “failure” in the process of developing solutions to problems.  

Social Studies
This school year we will learn a lot about community.  The first few lessons help students construct definitions for family.  Our definitions are pretty general. Family members love and take care of each other.  Families help people meet their basic needs.   


Social and Emotional Learning
This year we are embarking on new learning as staff and students.  We are delving deeper into social and emotional learning. How exciting!  We have been learning about the brain and how it functions. Kidshealth.com and natgeokids.com have some great information for kids if your child is interested in learning more. 


2nd Grade Musical
I’m so excited to see this year’s musical.  It is a brand new show titled Squirm!  The show will be on November 4th at 6:00pm at Brown School.  Ms. Mac will provide further details as we get closer to the debut.

Handwriting Students are so excited to begin cursive.  This week we are practicing basic strokes- undercurve, overcurve, and downcurve. I sure could feel your students’ energy as they arrived this morning.  It sounds like families had a wonderful break. I’m so happy to be back with your child, teaching full time.  We could use some extra help in the classroom.
